Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders,” is one of Africa's most famous sights. Here the mile-wide Zambezi River drops 300 feet into a sheer chasm to create a spectacular thundering cascade. Above the falls, the river is placid, with palm-fringed islands and rainforested banks. In 1860, Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone was the first Westerner to report the existence of this mile-wide cascade, and he named this magnificent wonder for his queen. Since then, it has attracted visitors from around the world. The Zambezi River marks the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and visitors can walk across a bridge to view the falls from both countries.
